The Senate Judiciary committee is pushing a bill (S. 1241) that would require bitcoin owners to register their bitcoins. The politicians offer their usual excuses — fighting terrorism and the drug war. It’s far more likely that they want a “piece of the action,” and to protect their Federal Reserve currency monopoly. But whatever the excuse, bitcoin regulation would stifle bitcoin innovation and must therefore be resisted.
