Subject: A bill to repeal the online gambling ban
Pressure on Congress works. People all over the Internet, including DC Downsizers, have been pressuring Congress to repeal the ban on transferring money to online gambling sites.
We’re starting to see a response.
Representative Barney Frank, the new chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has pledged to introduce legislation in the next couple of weeks to repeal the ban.
Now is the time to up the ante, so to speak, and encourage your Congressperson to co-sponsor Frank’s bill, and to ask your Senators to introduce a similar bill. You can send your message here.
Frank’s comments about the online gambling ban are telling . . .
“I think a lot of members of Congress voted for that without having given it a lot of attention. And I think that there is growing opposition to it. I think that this may be a case where, after the fact of having voted for it, people don’t like it and they reconsider.”

Almost no one in Congress read this bill before they voted on it. The bill was combined with another, unrelated piece of legislation, about Port Security, and that’s what Congress really voted to approve, not this gambling ban.

We need the “Read the Bills Act” and the “One Subject at a Time Act.”
To get these bills passed we need more pressure, because pressure works. But to exert more pressure we need more people, and to recruit more people we need better financing. April is nearing an end. Please help by making a contribution to further our work. You can do so here.
