A Congressman Changes His Mind

Change the political environment. Recruit more DC Downsizers. Share this message with others.

Quote of the Day:
“My policy has been, and will continue to be, while I have the honor to remain in the administration of the government, to be upon friendly terms with, but independent of, all the nations of the earth. To share in the broils of none. To fulfil our own engagements. To supply the wants, and be carriers for them all: Being thoroughly convinced that it is our policy and interest to do so.”
— George Washington, from a letter to Gouverneur Morris

Subject: A Congressman changes his mind on Iran resolution

House Concurrent Resolution 362 and Senate Resolution 580 both urge President Bush to blockade Iran. President Bush could also view these resolutions as a green-light to attack. Either a blockade or an attack would remove Iranian oil from the world market, and potentially close the straights of Hormuz, through which much of the world’s oil supply flows.

The loss of any oil from the Persian Gulf would send oil prices soaring and potentially plunge the entire world into an economic depression.

Your life, and your future, are hanging by a thread. Congress could choose to cut that thread at any moment.

The fact that H.Con. Res. 362 has 247 sponsors, while S. Res. 580 has 36 sponsors, are both strong evidence that our elected leaders are profoundly reckless people. But all hope is not lost . . .

Representative Robert Wexler, a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and A CO-SPONSOR OF H. Con. Res. 362, has changed his mind about the resolution!

Mr. Wexler is concerned that the resolution, especially the blockade provision, could be viewed as “a green light” for war. How did he come to have this concern? Because his constituents told him to be concerned about it.

Some of those constituents were DC Downsizers. YOU! Your messages do have an impact.

Mr. Wexler is going to be working to remove the blockade language from the resolution, but he needs your help. These resolutions have far too many co-sponsors. If a vote were held today they would probably pass with the greatest of ease, with too few members of Congress bothering to read or ponder the staggering consequences of their action.

We must continue to hammer Congress on this issue. Send a message from our Iran campaign asking Congress to deny the President the authority to attack Iran. Use your personal comments to ask your elected representatives to also oppose H. Con. Res. 362 and S. Res. 580. Tell them a blockade of Iran could cause oil prices to soar and plunge the world into a depression. You can send your message here.

Please also give DownsizeDC.org some help. We’ve been so busy launching our new website that we’ve neglected fundraising this month. We’re way behind and there are only 11 days left in the month.
