We have our monthly message from Ian Bernard of Free Talk Live (below). I will be on his show tonight (Saturday) as well as The Harry Browne Show, both heard at GCNLive.com. See that site for details.
On those programs, as well as on the show I host on Sundays (also at GCNLive.com), I will be making a big DownsizeDC.org announcement. It will be the first big news of 2006 for DownsizeDC.org — an exciting new development. I’ll also be plugging the new blog at DownsizeDC.org, as well as encouraging people to act to stop the Patriot Act.
ACTION ITEM: When it comes to the Patriot Act, we have a chance, however slim, to stop it. Democrats are trying to stop a vote to renew provisions of the Patriot Act, and if they succeed these provisions will sunset. They will die. They will be no more. There are also new provisions of the Patriot Act that will never take effect if no vote is held. Right now, the Democrats see a chance to win public support by opposing the Patriot Act. Let’s encourage the Democrats to keep blocking a vote on the new and renewed Partiot Act. And tell the Republicans to join them. Help encourage all involved to let this issue die.
Now, as I said, the chances may be slim. But the odds are the best we’ve had during this entire process. Despite the opposition of more than 392 local governments and seven state governments, not only has the Patriot Act extension rolled through with barely a change, it has expanded. But a brokered deal that was supposed to pass before Thanksgiving collapsed.
This is our first ray of hope to stop this horrible law.
Congress comes back into session December 12. The provisions that are set to sunset, do so on December 31. So, pour it on.
- Use our Electronic Lobbyist System to tell your Represenative and Senator to let the sunsetting portions of the Patriot Act die.
- Then, if you want to take further action, use the phone number provided with their contact informaton (you must be logged in). Call and say your name and city, and tell them you want to leave a message opposing the Patriot Act.
