Today’s Downsizer-Dispatch…::::::Action Item:::::::Congress thinks it can pass law-after-law violating your rights, because you will just forget about it. The REAL ID Act is a case in point. Americans were not meant to carry national ID cards and internal passports and have all of their most personal information made available to the government. The 10th of each month is the anniversary of the passage of the REAL ID Act – the date on which the U.S. Senate imposed a national ID card on us. Do not forget about it. Hold a grudge about it. Check it out. ::::::Bad provisions of the Patriot Act will sunset on December 31 unless Congress votes to extend them. Word is that the House may vote tomorrow, and the Senate may take this up Monday, but there is a lot of resistance in both houses of Congress. We must encourage this resistance, and we must do it now! If they vote tomorrow it will be too late. So act now! To send your message to Congress opposing the extension of the Patriot Act click here. ::::::On the login page the phone numbers for your Rep. and your Senators are listed. Please call them and ask them to oppose the Patriot Act extension. Then tell us you made the calls and what they said to you. Over the weekend, I appeared on three radio shows to make a big announcement. Starting either January 1 or January 8 (details coming soon), DownsizeDC.org will have its own radio show! ::::::The weekly program will be called The Downsize DC Conference Call. It will be a place where we talk about what’s happening and where we’re going. The show will provide a forum for DC Downsizer perspectives on current events, introduce you to Downsize DC team members, and become a weekly gathering place for DC Downsizers. ::::::The show will be broadcast on the Genesis Communications Network and yours truly, Jim Babka, will be your host. The pressure is on for Congress to pass it when they return December 12. The bill sunsets December 31. I will be on his show tonight (Saturday) as well as The Harry Browne Show, both heard at GCNLive.com. See that site for details. ::::::On those programs, as well as on the show I host on Sundays (also at GCNLive.com), I will be making a big DownsizeDC.org announcement. It will be the first big news of 2006 for DownsizeDC.org — an exciting new development. I’ll also be plugging the new blog at DownsizeDC.org, as well as encouraging people to act to stop the Patriot Act. ::::::ACTION ITEM: When it comes to the Patriot Act, we have a chance, however slim, to stop it. Democrats are trying to stop a vote to renew provisions of the Patriot Act, and if they succeed these provisions will sunset. They will die. They will be no more. There are also new provisions of the Patriot Act that will never take effect if no vote is held. Right now, the Democrats see a chance to win public support by opposing the Patriot Act. Let’s encourage the Democrats to keep blocking a vote on the new and renewed Partiot Act. And tell the Republicans to join them. Help encourage all involved to let this issue die. :::
