Do You Trust Congress on Cybersecurity?

ACTION ITEM

Since 2011, there’s been a Congressional stalemate on “cybersecurity.”

Or as we’d like to call it, gridlock at its best! We’re skeptical a cybsersecurity bill is needed. But…

  • The House passed a bill last spring, the infamous, horrible CISPA
  • We thought we’d killed this bill, however…
  • The Senate has begun work on their version

I used DownsizeDC.org’s “Hands Off the Internet Campaign” to tell Congress I don’t trust them on this issue. I hope you will join me and send a letter.

The hardwired message says…

As a constituent, I insist that you oppose any attempts to undermine Internet freedom.

Congress believes it must do something to address every perceived risk, no matter how small. I think the opposite. Congressional action on any subject is always the greatest danger America faces.

Specifically, I feel threatened by the CISPA bill the House passed. I feel doubly threatened that the Senate is working on its own version.

I DENY CONSENT to both bills.

We need diversified and DECENTRALIZED solutions to cybersecurity threats. That’s the best way to minimize risk. This could be fostered by removing regulatory hurdles that prevent innovation. But the bills being considered do the opposite.

Senate Democrats favor more regulations on the voluntary sector. And House Republicans, in their CISPA bill…

– Allow NSA collection of EVEN MORE of my personal data
– Permit companies to break their privacy agreements with me
– Seem to encourage “preemptive hacking” against suspected attackers, vigilante-style

I believe these proposals are CRIMINAL in nature. They violate the Constitution and basic moral precepts. Don't be a co-conspirator in this gangsterism. OPPOSE CISPA and other intrusive cybersecurity bills. Your legitimacy depends on fighting crime, not multiplying it.
