Does the NSA actually protect you?

President Obama will speak about the NSA on Friday. He's expected to justify the NSA's crimes against the Constitution. Please oppose this before the President speaks…

You won't be alone. Small government conservatives on the “Right” and civil libertarians on the “Left” agree. This is a transpartisan issue.

I suggest using DownsizeDC.org’s “I Am Not Afraid” campaign. The hardwired message says…

I am not afraid of terrorism. I want you to stop being afraid on my behalf. End your politically profitable war on terror.

You may borrow from or copy these additional comments…

I request this in anticipation of President Obama's NSA speech tomorrow. He is expected to justify the NSA's overall approach, while suggesting a few cosmetic reforms of no consequence. Please know…

I DENY CONSENT to this approach.

The President appears to believe he will be blamed for the next terrorist attack, IF he curbs the NSA. I reject the President's concerns about blame. He did not swear an oath that he would strive to appear blameless. He swore an oath to the Constitution.

As did you. HONOR YOUR OATH OF OFFICE.

I understand that determined terrorists can strike anywhere, anytime, REGARDLESS of the laws on the books. I ALSO know that terrorist attacks are extremely rare. You must not destroy rights permanently for the sake of such an ephemeral threat.

Even worse, your abusive spying programs don’t even work. As a New America Foundation report says (http://bit.ly/L5nvUZ), the NSA's surveillance program “has had no discernible impact on preventing acts of terrorism.”

Obama's own NSA review panel came to the same conclusion!

Since Obama won’t implement “change” on his own, I insist that you…

* pass Rep. Rush Holt's Surveillance State Repeal Act (HR 2818), which would repeal the Patriot Act, and also…
* pass  Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's and Sen. Pat Leahy's USA Freedom Act, which would stop bulk collection of telephone records and increase transparency

I'll be watching what you do.
