The Congressional Research Service (CRS) provides detailed reports to Congress on matters of public interest. This costs $100 million per year. However . . .
- Non-classified reports are NOT posted on-line
- Private publishers sell copies to lobbyists, executives, and others who can afford to pay
DownsizeDC.org has joined with 28 other organizations in urging the Librarian of Congress to appoint a Director of the CRS that will work with Congress in making non-confidential reports accessible for free on-line. This means the public will be able to see the reports that members of Congress and their staffs see.
The letter we sent to the Librarian is posted at OpenTheGovernment.org (.pdf).
