Justin Amash wants YOU to understand the bills

Quote of the Day: “If you can't convince them, confuse them.” – Harry S. Truman

Rep. Justin Amash introduced a bill to make bills understandable.

It's NOT the Read the Bills Act, but it seems inspired by it. The tide is slowly moving in YOUR direction.

And unlike the phony, unenforceable “3-day rule” the previous House passed to blunt the drive for our real “Read the Bills Act,” Amash's bill would, if passed, become a LAW.

It also makes the federal “government” more transparent.

We ask you to…

  • Tell Congress that passing the Read the Bills Act is best, but…
  • Amash's bill should ALSO be supported too.

Use our “Read the BIlls” campaign to send this message.

You may borrow from or copy this letter…

Also, support Rep.Justin Amash's HR 760, the Readable Legislation Act of 2013.

It borrows an idea from RTBA, a requirement to actually make bills understandable.

As you know, many bills amend or revise sections of old laws, and say something like this:

“Section 415 (21 U.S.C. 350d) is amended in subsection (a)(2), by inserting after the first sentence the following: . . .”

Yet you're never told what the original law said, so you don't know what you're actually amending!

Both RTBA and HR 740 fix this. They require the text of the original language to be published in the bill, so you know EXACTLY what will be changed from current law.

This will…

* help YOU understand bills better, and…
* help the American people understand bills they look up at the Thomas website. ( http://thomas.loc.gov)

This is a GREAT step towards transparency, because….

No ordinary citizen has time to BOTH read a bill AND look up every referenced-to section in the U.S. code. It's impossible.

HR 760 makes it easier for citizens to…

* read the bill…
* UNDERSTAND the bill, and…
* tell YOU their opinion about the bill.

Do you really oppose this? Do you really want to preserve the status quo, where not even Congress understands the laws it passes?

To convince me you're serious about reform…

* Introduce the Read the Bills Act.
* Co-sponsor the Readable Legislation Act.
