Our Lexicon: Democracy

Some people, whenever they hear the word “democracy,” yell “We live in a Republic, not a Democracy!”They define “democracy” as mob rule, which the Founding Fathers were against.

We do not use “democracy” in this narrow sense. Instead, we use the more common and broader understanding of democracy which encompasses anything from village assemblies to any representative government in which the representatives are chosen by popular elections. In this sense of democracy, both the republic of the United States and the monarchy of Great Britain are democracies, whereas the republic of Saddam’s Iraq and the monarchy of Saudi Arabia are not.
