Out of Iraq by 2010/2013

According to the Associated Press . . .

“Two Iraqi officials say the U.S. and Iraq are close to a deal under which all American combat troops would leave by October 2010 with remaining U.S. forces gone about three years later. A U.S. official in Washington acknowledges progress has been made on the timelines for a U.S. departure but offered no firm date. Another U.S. official strongly suggested the 2010 date may be too ambitious.”

I have a few comments about this. One, good. It will be nice to save the money and the lives. Two, we’ll continue to be in Afghanistan, but there’s probably something to be said for that, and more troops would become available to do the job better. Three, it doesn’t matter what the U.S. negotiators say about the timetable. This is a decision the Iraqis will make, and if they say 2010/2013, they’re almost certainly right. Four, Obama is losing a big issue. If he still wants to win this election he had better stop talking about tax increases. He’s sounding a lot like Jimmy Carter from the 1970s. He would do a lot better to start sounding more like Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
