Presidential Candidate Introduces Read the Bills Act

Which Presidential Candidate introduced the Read the Bills Act? #tlot Retweet

Senator (and Presidential candidate) Rand Paul has re-introduced…

“The Read the Bills Act” (RTBA)

Downsize DC's “Read the Bills Act” would force Congress to read every word of every bill they want to impose on you.

Even more challenging, bills would be read aloud, and at least half of the members would have to sit through the reading.

And if they don't, the legislation would be considered null and void in court.

This is the bill, from our Downsize DC Agenda, that we consider the most important.

Rand Paul has continued to keep his promise. He's delivered our bill, intact. But he hasn't stopped there…

  • He also introduced a Read the Bill _rule_ for the Senate. This rule imposes a waiting period, before voting, based on the size of the bill.
  • He has even made Read the Bills a priority theme on the campaign trail. It's mentioned in the majority of his “stump speeches.”

Our RTBA, with the read aloud provision, would dramatically reduce the number and size of bills Congress passes. They won't want to endure the fatigue of reading long bills. This would be a crucial reform.

We should…

  • Thank Rand Paul for introducing “Read the Bills”
  • Ask your Senators to become co-sponsors

Do this…

Go to Rand Paul's Facebook page. Pick the most recent post, and leave a comment like this, “Thank you Senator Paul for introducing's 'Read the Bills Act' (S.1571) in the Senate.”

Call his office and say thank you to the staffer who answers: 202-224-4343

Then do this . . .

Use our Educate the Powerful System to ask your supposed representatives to also sponsor “Read the Bills”

The hardwired letter to Congress for that campaign reads…

I expect my Senators to co-sponsor S. 1571 and strongly encourage my Representative to introduce the Read the Bills Act.

Following is the letter I sent to Congress. You can copy or edit it for your personal comments…

If I must submit to every word of every bill you pass, then you must submit to READ every word of every bill you pass.< I DENY MY CONSENT for you to continue passing “laws” you haven’t read. Failing to read your bills amounts to legislation without representation. Revolutions have been fought for less than this.

You can send your letter to Congress here.
