Should Defense Be About Defense?

NOTE: Downsize DC President, Jim Babka, will be speaking to the Campaign for Liberty, in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday evening. Details are in the P.S.

I told my members of Congress to support the “One Subject at a Time Act” using’s campaign.

I invite you to do the same. The hardwired message says…

I would notice and appreciate your co-sponsorship of the “One Subject at a Time Act” (OSTA), HR 2113 and S 1664.

You may copy or edit these personal comments…

A truly representative government would require that bills be limited to one subject, as OSTA requires. It would prevent Congress from attaching unrelated bills to popular or “must-pass” bills. Each bill would have to stand on its own merits.

This is important, because bills with multiple subjects reflect Congressional deal-making. They do NOT have the consent of the people.

Congress would also do itself a favor by passing OSTA. You would function better.

For instance…

What if OSTA was in force today, while the Senate is considering S 1197, the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)?

* Sen. Jay Rockefeller's proposed cybersecurity amendment would be disallowed. This bill is a central-planning scheme about domestic technology policy, NOT Defense.
* An Iran sanctions amendment would ALSO be disallowed. lt's about foreign policy, NOT Defense.
* Historically, NDAA has been full of un-related pork.

Senators have proposed a whopping 507 amendments to the NDAA so far.

How many are actually about Defense?

How many aren't?

You pretend to be my “representative.” If that were true, I would be far from alone in demanding that you…

* Vote AGAINST any unrelated amendment to the NDAA…
* Vote AGAINST the 2014 NDAA if it has unrelated amendments…
* Co-sponsor the One Subject at a Time Act!

I will be watching what you do. In fact, I'm waging a peaceful campaign to discredit you and your institution, based entirely on your behavior. You can do the right thing, or you can give me more conversational fodder. Since all government rests upon the consent of the governed, I think you're on thin ice.
