Dear DC Downsizers,
We don’t like sending you two messages in one day. But votes are to occur in the U.S. Senate, throughout the day, on S. 2248, “The FISA Amendments Act,” and amendments to that bill. S. 2248 makes permanent the hastily passed and soon to sunset, Protect America Act (PAA).
Our message to the Senate, is to let PAA expire. But because there is, amongst the political class, significant momentum for passage of a bill that shows that they’re “doing something about terrorism,” we also want to support amendments that reduce the damage of this very badly constructed bill.
On Monday, we sent you a Dispatch with a list of the amendments we’re supporting. If you don’t have that Dispatch handy, you can access it from our blog.
What is needed right now — this very second — is phone calls. Especially to Democrats.
Our coalition partners have suggested that certain Senators are especially important at this moment.
* California, Feinstein
* Florida, Nelson
* New York, Clinton
* Rhode Island, Whitehouse
We still believe that Republicans Sununu of New Hampshire, Hagel of Nebraska, and Specter of Pennsylvania, are reachable as well.
When you register and/or login to the Repeal the fraudulent “Protect America Act” campaign at DownsizeDC.org, you will see your Senators listed there, with phone information included.
We still recommend you send a message using our website. Our work will continue as the Senate and House versions will need to be reconciled in a conference committee.
But the urgent action item is a phone call.
