The Constitution: Here’s a new tool you can use

Quote of the Day: “Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.” — William Pitt, the Younger

As far as we know, we’re the only “free” site that allows you to send the same letter to all three of your elected representatives at the same time. With other sites you either have to . . .

* Pay, or . . .
* Go to three different web forms, one each for your House Rep. and your two Senators

Please take note, we do NOT send emails to Congress. Instead, our system fills out the communications forms on the websites for your representatives. Obviously, we’re pretty proud of the software we created to do this. It took a lot to create, and it takes a lot to maintain. And . . .

Having put so much into creating this software, we’re not eager to let other people use it to send messages to Congress advocating things we don’t believe in. That’s why we create individual campaigns, and give each campaign a hardwired message. Simple stuff like . . .

* Oppose this
* Support that
* Please introduce DownsizeDC.org’s “Read the Bills Act.”

These hardwired messages make it impossible for people to hijack our system for their own purposes. But they also impose a constraint. Sometimes we want to ask you to pester Congress about an issue for which we don’t have a campaign, nor time to create one, and so we have to let the opportunity pass. Recently . . .

We’ve tried to address this problem by creating a few generic campaigns, such as . . .

* Cut spending
* Cut taxes
* Reduce regulations

These kinds of campaigns give us a lot of flexibility. And they help you too. If something happens in Congress that makes you want to comment, you’re ENCOURAGED to do so on your own, using one of our generic campaigns. Now, here comes another one . . .

We’re constantly annoyed by how often members of Congress violate their oaths to serve and defend the Constitution. We often feel the urge to dash off a letter of protest. But no existing Downsize DC campaign quite seems to fit. We’ve now fixed that with our new campaign titled “Tell Congress to obey the Constitution.”

The hardwired message for this new campaign reads: “Please obey the Constitution’s limits on federal power.” To this you can add your own personal comments about some violation that currently concerns you.

Perhaps, just to make sure Congress doesn’t think we’ve forgotten about them while they’re home campaigning, you could fire off a message right now using this new tool. You can add personal comments if you want, or just send the hardwired message. Either approach will help to make Congress nervous about their rampant illegality.

And, of course, though this service is “free,” it does cost money, so contributions and new monthly pledges are highly welcome.

Have a good weekend!
