Disappointing news for Read the Bills

Today’s Downsizer-Dispatch…::::::On December 14 we told you we had a sponsor for the Read the Bills Act. We’ve posted the letter from the Congressman who said he would sponsor RTBA on our blog. You can read it and decide for yourself whether or not we had reason to be excited. ::::::This good news caught us off-guard. We thought RTBA needed a few improvements before submission. We quickly moved to make these important changes to the bill before calling the Congressman’s office. ::::::When we called, we were told he wasn’t going to sponsor the bill. ::::::Who is this Congressman? What does his letter say? And what were the events that led up to this moment? ::::::You can discover the answer to all these questions at our DownsizeDC.org blog. ::::::While we’re disappointed, we’re really not that bothered by the news. During the coming days and weeks (starting today) we intend to explain why we still feel good. We’ll also lay out our plans for 2006 and beyond. When you see what we have in store, we think you’ll be excited as we are. ::::::Jim Babka:::President:::DownsizeDC.org, Inc. ::::::P.S. Is this really bad news? Well, I’m putting the finishing touches on a second post for our blog (should be available this evening) that explains why we’re not really bothered by this news. Instead, we’re excited. Is that unrealistic? We don’t think so. Learn why in a second blog post titled, “Why I’m Still Quite Excited About RTBA Despite the Congressman’s Decision.” ::::::P.P.S. One of the great things about our blog is that you can leave a comment. We’d like to hear from you!

What our legal research on Delegation has yielded

A Progress Report::::::Before Christmas we requested your help in making improvements to the Read the Bills Act (RTBA). You responded (thank you) and we went to work. ::::::We were concerned about one method Congress might use for evading RTBA’s enforcement mechanisms. We feared Congress would make their bills easier to read by delegating all of the “rule making” details to the bureaucracy. But our legal research quickly showed us that . . . :::
