Do You Want Access to Life-saving Drugs?

ACTION ITEM

I told Congress to…

Make the FDA advisory, not mandatory…

via DownsizeDC.org's FDA campaign.

Please do the same. You may copy or edit this sample letter…

The FDA's drug approval process is IMMORAL. It denies the sick access to potentially life-saving drugs. It also DOESN’T WORK…

Former FDA head Andrew von Eschenbach says the process is “risk-averse” and “out-dated.” It retards the creation of groundbreaking drugs (http://bit.ly/1pd6Ctz). That kills people. Here's the latest example…

Pirfenidone slows the irreversible lung scarring associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This disease takes three to five uncomfortable years to kill a person. The Wall Street Journal reports that Canadians can use Pirfenidone  So can the Chinese. But Americans who suffer from this disease are forced to die, thanks to the FDA.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee seems to agree that the current approval process is too “risk-averse.” (http://energycommerce.house.gov/cures) Here's the remedy…

Allow choice. End the FDA monopoly on drug approval. Allow each patient to acquire the drugs they want, using whatever safety certifications they prefer.

* Drug producers could still submit to the FDA approval process

* Or, they could use private testing firms like the NSF or the Underwriter’s Laboratory

* Consumers could decide for themselves which “stamp of approval” to trust

This competition would…

* force the FDA to improve…

* INCREASE accountability

* deliver drugs sooner, and…

* save lives!

The moral thing is also the practical thing in this case. Give us choice!

–END OF LETTER–

Send your letter using DownsizeDC.org's Educate the Powerful System.

Also…

No one else has a campaign asking Congress to make the FDA advisory rather than mandatory. This is a strategic approach that doesn't take on the agency itself, but instead asserts your moral right to make decisions about your own body. It's a uniquely Downsize DC strategy!

But we need your support to promote innovative ideas like this. Our costs are paid by our donors and monthly pledgers. Their support enables us to…

  • maintain the Educate the Powerful System

  • monitor legislation

  • create clever campaigns like this one

  • write sample letters you can use to pressure Congress

If you're one of these donors, thank you. If not, we are looking for people, like you, to respond with generous contributions of varying sizes.

If you wish you can give more, one strategic way to do so is to make a monthly pledge.

Please click this link, and add your support, today.

Thank you,
