Downsize DC outreach

What Downsize DC President Jim Babka is doing to Downsize DC with his day, today, and how you can help . . .

At 2 PM . . .

Jim Babka will be on a conference call with other organizations combating warrantless eavesdropping by government agents as well as special immunity for telecoms and government employees who may have violated the privacy rights of Americans.

We’ve explained at our website and in previous messages, available on our blog, what was at stake.

The good news is that our efforts appear to be working, particularly for the big surveillance bill.

We still must be vigilant because it would be real easy to sneak the immunity provision into one of the large appropriation bills. WE WANT “CLEAN” BILLS.

So he’ll be learning and strategizing in this meeting. But you can take important and specific action here and now.

Please send a message through our proprietary Electronic Lobbyist System.

THEN CALL your representatives in Congress to oppose the passage of any such “immunity” provisions. You can see their office number on the campaign page once you’re logged-in.

Again, your efforts ARE making a difference. Let’s see this all the way through to victory.

At 3 PM . . .

James Wilson|2006-12-04 08:28:03-05|REAL ID Reactions|”Senator Clinton seems to have contempt for the opinions of her constituents. This is one of the lamest replies we’ve seen. That makes it all the more important to overwhelm her office with our petitions

Dear [petitioner’s name]

:Thank you for writing about the REAL ID Act. The thoughts and concerns of my New York constituents are very important to me. I thank you for taking the time to share them with me. Please know that as I participate in discussions on the issues before the United States Senate, your thoughts and the opinions of all who write are given careful consideration.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. Please check my website for updates on the issues being considered by the Senate.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

But at least the staffer who sent this reply got the issue right. This staffer in Senator Durbin’s office wasn’t paying attention. Again, this is all the more reason to flood Durbin’s office and make them pay attention

Dear [petitioner]

:Thank you for your message about increased funding for veterans health care and other veterans benefits. I appreciate hearing from you.

The letter goes on about Sen. Durbin’s support for veterans.

Finally, in response to our Real ID Grudge Day Dispatch, Downsizer Marshall Fritz notes,

Maybe someone could drag up the assurances that SS “card” would never be used as ID.

That was 1936.

About 1963, the Supreme Court held that indeed the **card** could not be used for ID, but that the number could.

Slippery, and I still hold a grudge.
