How Obamacare Is NOT Like Your Car Insurance

From the Congressional Budget Office: “A mandate requiring all individuals to purchase health insurance would be an unprecedented form of federal action. The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States.” (Hat tip: Heritage Foundation)

I sent the following letter telling Congress to repeal Obamacare. I urge you to do the same.

The Supreme Court has agreed to review Obamacare’s individual mandate. But you need to repeal Obamacare before that happens. Take action now to free the economy from the crippling uncertainty that Obamacare has caused. We cannot afford to wait for a Supreme Court ruling.

Please understand that the Individual Mandate is NOT AT ALL similar to laws forcing car drivers to purchase liability insurance. Driving is a voluntary act, and the states own the roads. They can set conditions for the use of their roads, and those who don’t like it can walk, or take the bus.

Plus, the states only require liability insurance, covering injuries to others. There’s no requirement for drivers to insure their own injuries. This approach makes perfect sense — even private road owners would do the same.

In contrast, Obamacare’s Individual Mandate is based on the theory that Congress can regulate anything and everything — without limit. Obamacare even regulates non-action, by fining people who don’t buy health insurance. Under this theory we will soon reach the point where everything not expressly forbidden will be mandatory.

You are supposed to serve me, not the other way around. You cannot compel me to buy something I don’t want. You cannot impose conditions on my very existence. I withdraw my consent to be “governed” in this way. This is not government; it’s crime.

Please be aware that I know the insurance industry favors Obamacare. Of course they do. Obamacare forces people to buy their product. But you are supposed to represent me, NOT the insurance industry. So be clear about where your responsibilities lie.

You swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Obamacare exceeds the enumerated powers the Constitution grants the federal state. This makes your task clear. Sponsor legislation to repeal Obamacare, and do it immediately.

I’m watching what you do. You can either obey the Constitution, or criminally disregard your oath of office. Choose wisely.
