Human Innovation: Meat Without Cruelty

No animals were harmed in the creation of this steak.

Imagine, if you will, a federal war on “cruelty to animals.” It would have a host of features many of the more passionate animal rights activists would love. Prohibitions and regulations and special police forces and big, big, big budgets growing constantly larger as Americans persisted in eating meat.

It would have smuggling and black markets and “meat speak-easies” and no-knock raids on clandestine cattle ranches.

Which is all to say that it wouldn’t work.

But human innovation is already working to reduce “cruelty to animals.”

Clever methods for growing meat in test tubes are being developed, and a non-profit company, New Harvest, has already been formed to develop and exploit this new technology.

Human innovation wins again.

Throw another test tube on the bar-b mate.
