I am saddened by the loss of 30 American service members when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan this past weekend.
If news reports are to be believed, most of them were Navy SEALS coming to the rescue of Army Rangers caught in a firefight. If that’s true, you have a predicament…
- If the U.S. uses unmanned drones to bomb the alleged enemy, often women and children are bombed as well as innocent Afghan men http://tinyurl.com/43g5pm2
- In response to this dilemma, the U.S. has recently increased the use of special ops forces in night raids
- This puts more of our elite troops at risk, as this weekend’s crash demonstrates
- Yet these night raids alienate Afghans and anger President Karzai just as much as do drone bombings http://tinyurl.com/3of3ydz
Why should so many Afghanistan civilians be put at risk?
Why should so many American service members be put at risk?
Al Qaeda is crippled and nearly extinct, so I can guess you could say, “We’ve already ‘won’ in Afghanistan.” But the future of that country is up to the Afghans, not the U.S.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government’s credit rating is downgraded. We cannot afford the continued occupation of Afghanistan. Not financially, and not in human lives.

Maybe he was being sarcastic. But the words express how Americans are feeling. Don’t wait for a soft deadline of 2014 to evacuate most troops. Get them all out ASAP!
