The NSA Makes You Poorer

ACTION ITEM

We've been encouraging you to hit your Representative and Senators HARD to repeal the Surveillance State.

Why?

Because NOW's the best time…

  • Every week, more revelations about NSA crimes are revealed
  • In July, Rep. Justin Amash's proposal to defund the NSA's mass surveillance almost prevailed in the House
  • Since then, some members who voted against Amash, have changed their minds
  • This issue is non-partisan; many on both the “Left” and the “Right” want to restore the Fourth Amendment
  • And, as the letter below reveals, the NSA is making YOU worse off financially

There are now several bills in Congress to “reform” the NSA and tweak certain laws.

DownsizeDC.org, however, prefers Rep. Rush Holt’s (D-NJ) Surveillance State Repeal Act, because it gets to the heart of the issue. If you want…

  • The Patriot Act repealed
  • The FISA Amendments Act repealed
  • Searches of Americans done only with search warrants and probable cause

… then this is the bill you should support.

Our campaign's hardwired message says simply…

Co-sponsor the “Surveillance State Repeal Act (HR 2818).”

You may borrow from or copy these additional sample comments…

HR 2818 will do more than repeal the unconstitutional Patriot and FISA Amendments Acts.

It will also help the economy!

That's because the NSA's lawlessness is hurting American tech companies large and small. Other countries are now competing to make personal data private. As the Wall Street Journal reports (http://shar.es/KIppB)…

* Studies estimate the NSA will cost Silicon Valley $35 billion in lost overseas business
* A Cloud Security Alliance survey finds 56% of non-U.S. members are less likely to use U.S.-based cloud services, and 10% had canceled a contract

Former Obama official Chris Finan agrees. In a Washington Post interview, he says (http://shar.es/KI2AY)…

* The NSA isn’t needed to keep us “safe”
* The federal government should share security threats with tech companies, rather than collect our data
* The private sector is the font of innovation and should be a leader in security

I don’t know how much data the NSA has on me personally. I just know they assert the power to search ANYONE without a warrant, and that's bad enough. They're scaring off potential clients of U.S. businesses. These activities make me POORER because they hurt the overall economy.

Your oath of office demands you repeal the Surveillance State. But you should also know that your continued toleration of it will mean jobs lost and a stagnant economy.

Do the right thing. Support HR 2818.
