We’ve been doing all of that for a decade-and-a-half. It hasn’t worked. It cannot work. Instead, it gives the terrorists exactly what they want. In truth, there’s only one way to win the war on terror.
DON’T BE AFRAID!
- Don’t feel fear.
- Don’t change your way of life.
- Don’t give politicians more power — give them less.
- Don’t endorse military action in Islamic countries — oppose it.

Responding in fear gives the terrorists what they want. I will not do that. Neither should you. I face more danger from driving an automobile than I do from terrorism. We must not change our way of life or trash our Constitution because of it.
Counter-attacks also give the terrorists what they want. Such attacks kill innocents, inspire new terrorists, and push Islamic societies toward deeper fundamentalism. All the military actions taken to date have made things worse, not better. OUR MILITARY HAS NO USEFUL ROLE TO PLAY IN THIS MATTER.
Please, do as I am doing. Declare that you have already won your personal war on terrorism, by NOT being afraid.
