We hear it all the time, especially on Memorial Day — U.S. soldiers died to protect our freedom, or make our way of life possible, or to make the world a better place. It sounds great. We want to believe it. Indeed, it’s painful to think otherwise.
But it should be even more traumatic to contemplate the future loss of innocent lives. And if they died because we failed to learn from history, we deserve that trauma. That’s why, once again, we’re promoting a series of articles about U.S. military history in the run-up to Memorial Day.
